How much building cover do you need?
Many people, when asked how much they'd need to rebuild their home would have little or no idea. If you're just going through a house purchase or have recently moved, your estate agent's valuation report is a good estimate for the amount of cover you need. Be careful not to confuse its market value i.e. what you bought it for or could sell it for now, with its rebuild cost, as there could be a big difference between these.
esure offers policies with an unlimited limit of building cover protection. This makes life easier for you because you don't have to have an exact figure before you can get insurance.
Choosing the right amount of cover for contents insurance
The same is true of contents insurance. If you have a figure in mind, great! If not, choose a policy with a specified limit of contents cover. When deciding how much cover to take out, think about how much it would cost to replace everything you own as new. Take a walk through your home - open wardrobes, kids cupboards, jewellery cases - it's usually more than you think.
If you have particular valuables that you want extra protection for, mention this when you are choosing your policy or check the 'specified items' amount covered in your policy. Some companies like esure will cover certain items at no extra cost; for example, our standard policies offer home office equipment cover up to £10,000 and up to £500 for personal money in the home. So with esure you might not need to take out extra cover.
Most policies will include an excess. This is the amount you will need to pay towards any claim. This can be paid directly to a supplier or deducted from your settlement, but if you are comparing policies make sure you compare the same excess on each one.
