The Average Family Home

Back

Saturday 27th August 2011: New research out today reveals that the average family home will witness nearly 5,000 kisses, view more than 14,600 TV programmes, 832 spilt drinks and 288 DIY jobs(1).

The study by esure home insurance shows that during the eight years the average family lives in a house it will witness everything from passionate sex to heated rows as well as breakages, social gatherings and sleepless nights.

During this time, it will also be home to a child, three pets, two different cars and play host to 1,248 visitors. Over the years, 16 rooms will be redecorated with eight new carpets, eight sets of curtains and 16 pieces of new furniture.

The research of 3,000 homeowners also revealed that families will get together for 2,080 meals, 192 dinner parties and 80 BBQs during the summer months. Passionate couples will even have sex 832 times and cuddle up to watch 192 romantic movies.

But romance is not always in the air as there will be 6,656 arguments between family members and siblings, including 832 just over what programmes to watch on television. Furthermore, doors will be slammed 192 times while troublesome children will be told to sit on the naughty step at least twice a week – 832 times in total. A total of 16 valuable items will be broken, 96 plates smashed and 832 spilt drinks while floors and furniture will be wiped free of food 1,664 times.

Nikki Sellers, Head of home insurance at esure, said: “Our homes are the focal point of our lives and every home will have its own story to tell, whether it’s good or bad. It’s heart-warming to think that it’s the place where babies are brought home, marriage proposals are made and parties are held, but equally, it sees arguments, doors slammed, food burnt and drinks spilt. In a typical eight year period, the average house in Britain could tell many stories.”

Hardworking owners will also tend to the garden 384 times, replace 192 light bulbs and carry out 288 DIY jobs and household repairs. The vacuum will come out 1,664 times while the washing machine will have to cope with 2,080 loads of laundry.

The study also found that 96 dinners will be burnt while residents will be locked out eight times and suffer from 384 sleepless nights.

Nikki Sellers further added: “With the staggering number of food nightmares and drink spillages the average home has to endure over its lifetime and the sheer volume of visitors, it’s crucial for homeowners to have accidental damage cover in case a disaster strikes.”
