Holidaymakers warned over security

Back

Holidaymakers have been warned to keep valuables safe when jetting off to sunnier climes.

A survey by high street insurance retailer Swinton showed that 63% of home owners fail to lock away their valuables out of sight before going on holiday.

According to the study, 7% of people make no attempt to secure their home when on holiday and only 10% arrange for a house sitter to keep an eye on things.

Over half of all burglaries occur when a house is unoccupied.

As a deterrent to thieves, homeowners are being advised to make their houses look lived in when they are away.

However, the results showed that there are some people who take security much more seriously.

About 35% of people will set light timers to create the impression that there is someone indoors and 31% of people will organise for a neighbour to collect the post so unopened piles do not attract burglars.
