Britons lose it on foreign roads

Back

A third of people with car insurance have admitted driving on the wrong side of the road while abroad, according to a report. And figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) show one in five of those had a near miss.

Britons clearly need to make travel insurance a priority after half of those surveyed said they got lost on foreign roads, while nearly 1 in 5 people have narrowly escaped car accidents and 1 in 10 have actually gone the wrong way around a roundabout.

Crime is also an issue with an unlucky few losing all their valuables following a theft or motorway mugging. And of those who take their own car abroad, less than half remember to take their driving license and registration details with them. Only a third carry details of their breakdown policy and only 37% check local driving laws in the region they will be staying.

Every year 8 million Britons drive abroad on holiday. Studies show tourists are three times as likely to be involved in road accidents than local drivers, with alcohol often acting as a contributing factor.
