A significant percentage of British drivers are considering taking extreme action in a bid to combat the spiralling cost of motoring.
As the prices of fuel, servicing, repairs and car insurance all continue to rise, motorists are looking at how they can reduce their monthly bills.
As many as one in six people surveyed by insurance.co.uk said they were tempted to give up their current job and look for something more local as the cost of commuting was proving prohibitively high.
Others said they would switch to public transport or car-sharing schemes as alternative methods of getting to work.
Of those who used their car for leisure purposes, 41% said that rising costs mean they had started to cut back on day trips. And almost as many had reduced the number of times they went shopping or visited family and friends.
More than half of those surveyed said they would start spending less on MOTs, servicing and car parts - a worringly high number, given the potential consequences of such a move on car and road safety.
The researchers said that their findings highlighted the need for motorists to take stock of their finances and look at other measures, such as shopping around for car insurance cover.
