Car buyers warned of write-offs

People looking to buy used cars are being warned to ensure any vehicle they purchase has not been written-off by insurers.

According to history check provider HPI, one in every 25 cars is found to be an insurance write-off when checked at the request of a buyer.

The company said that purchasers must ensure the car is roadworthy and that any repairs have been carried out. Only category C and D write-offs are allowed to be returned to the road.

Nicola Johnson from HPI said: "Buying a used car can be a minefield of potential problems. Unscrupulous sellers are using more and more sophisticated ways to con unsuspecting buyers out of their cash.

"It's easy to be taken in by shiny paintwork, but the fact is, it could be hiding a multitude of faults.

"If you don't know much about cars, always pay for an expert opinion. We strongly recommend buyers get both a HPI vehicle history check and a vehicle inspection from the likes of the RAC for true peace of mind."
