Cumbria urged to flood-proof homes

Cumbrian householders hit by the devastating recent floods are being advised to make sure their properties are not just repaired but also made flood-proof.

Environment Agency spokesman Robert Runcie said that damaged homes are often simply reinstated, meaning they may be affected by any future floods.

"One in six homes are already at risk, so it is vital that homeowners look at ways of protecting their properties. Climate change means that flood risk is likely to increase," he said.

"We urge that people who have been flooded should insist that their insurers rebuild their homes so that damage is reduced if future flooding occurs."

Ceramic tiles on the ground floor, rugs instead of fitted carpets, raising the height of electrical sockets and having movable kitchen units are all recommended.

Mr Runcie says that taking such steps may cost more, but they will probably save money on home insurance claims in the long run.
