Driver who walked dog in car banned

Using his car to walk his dog has left a man in County Durham without his driving licence for six months.

Paul Railton, 23, admitted to magistrates in Consett, Railton, that he was not in control of his vehicle, after he was caught by police driving at 5mph along Stonyheap Lane, near Consett, on December 4.

Prosecutor Sharon Lowrie said a cyclist had told officers that a dog was being dragged along from a car.

"The driver was hanging onto the dog's lead through the driver window, approaching a blind summit," she said.

Police told Railton to put his dog in the car and let him go, but charged him for the offence five days later.

Railton was given three points on his licence, a £66 fine and was told he must pay £58 legal costs.

But because he already had nine penalty points, he was also banned from the roads.
