Already struggling to contend with car insurance, MOT and the expense of keeping a vehicle on the road, motorists in Lincolnshire now have to contend with fixed penalty notices if they leave their engines running while popping to the shop.
Branding such drivers "irresponsible", North Lincolnshire Council said a fine of £20 would be imposed if its parking officers witnessed the offence. The penalty increases to £40 if not paid within 28 days.
The plans have drawn furious criticism from motorists across the country. The Association of British Drivers said: "Obviously people shouldn't get out of their car and keep their engines running because someone's going to steal it, but engines don't use much fuel while they're idling and there are some circumstances when you have to keep them running."
The council said the scheme would improve air quality in the area, adding that it would make exceptions at times, such as during cold weather when the driver is defrosting the windscreen or if the driver is elderly and needs to keep warm.
