Travellers who lose their passports face a hike in replacement charges abroad as of April 6.
Replacing both temporary and emergency documents overseas will cost 2.9 per cent more, which means £128 for a standard passport for over-16s and £71 for an emergency one.
Emergency travel documents will cost £91.50.
Losing your passport is just one of the perils facing Britons abroad, highlighting the need for adequate travel insurance.
Fees for passport applications in the UK will remain at current levels, with a standard adult passport costing £77.50.
Foreign Office minister Chris Bryant told MPS: "It is right that those who benefit from consular services should meet the cost of them, rather than the UK taxpayer."
