Host completes coffee-powered trip

BBC presenter Jem Stansfield has completed a 210-mile London to Manchester road trip in a car powered by coffee grounds.

The Bang Goes The Theory host will have been armed with a comprehensive car insurance as he test drove the experimental vehicle built out of scrap.

It is fitted with a system that turns coffee grounds into flammable gases to run the engine. Around 10,000 espressos will be needed for the journey with a fuel stop required every 40 miles.

Stansfield says he designed the vehicle to show youngsters the possibilities of harnessing energy from waste products and other alternative sources.

He said: "Everyone recognises that coffee can give a person a bit of a boost, but many probably had no idea it had enough energy locked away to power a car.

"It's important for kids to understand that power is not something that is mystically there, simply at the flick of a switch or by pushing a pedal."
