With most motorists now sleeping less than eight hours a day, early morning driving has become even more risky, a survey has pointed out.
Webuyanycar.com found that 86 per cent of the 3,000 motorists polled are sleeping far less than the reccommended guidelines.
According to the survey, more than 67 per cent are suffering from insomnia due to financial worries and concerns regarding work.
Around 83 per cent of motorists hit their beds later than 10pm, with 62 per cent citing television watching as the main reason.
Seventy four per cent of the drivers said that they drive through the morning rush hour despite not sleeping well at nights, and 56 per cent confessed that they speed their way to work in the early hours.
Moreover, the majority of car owners set off to work between 8am and 8.30am, the slot wherein the most accidents take place, making them more susceptible to incidents and subsequent higher car insurance premiums.
Webuyanycar.com operations head Jeremy Herbert said: "People are living fast-paced lives but worryingly our survey shows they don't seem to be able to slow down behind the wheel. This is even more dangerous when combined with a lack of sleep."
