Manchester top for student crime

Manchester has topped a list of university towns and cities where students are most likely to be the victims of burglary.

Students in the north-west town are also more at risk of becoming a victim of car crime than in any other of the 30 university towns in the survey.

Data from the 12 months between July 2007 and July 2008 revealed that students going to university in Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester are at a far higher risk of becoming a victim of crime than those in the safer towns of Lancaster, Durham and St Andrews.

Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Sheffield came out worst for both theft of and theft from cars. Students in Cardiff are among the most likely to have their car stolen, while students in Nottingham are at a higher risk of finding their cars broken into.

The study from firm LV= shows Manchester and Birmingham are the university towns with the highest burglary rates, whereas students studying in Durham and Lancaster are least likely to be broken into.

And Scottish cities bucked the trend, with Edinburgh, Aberdeen and St Andrews all appearing in the top five lowest-crime rated areas.

The research will make particularly interesting reading for all those preparing to begin freshers week at universities around the country. The results could be the boost students need to begin thinking about taking out car and home insurance, just in case the worst happens.
