Most British drivers admit speeding

British drivers are risking injury and increased car insurance premiums by indulging their love of speed, a survey has shown.

The study, by the makers of speed camera locators RoadPilot, found that 71% of those questioned admitted breaking the speed limit on more than a quarter of all journeys.

Most drivers admitted feeling frustration about the 70mph limit in place on dual carriageways and motorways, with 60% saying the limit should be increased.

The findings tally with figures recently released by the Department for Transport, which show 72% of cars travelled above the motorway limit during 2007.

A RoadPilot spokesman said: "The research shows that speeding, particularly on motorways, is a common vice among UK motorists.

Given the number of people that admit to speeding on a regular basis, and that there are more than 10,000 fixed and frequently-used mobile speed camera sites on UK roads, there is potentially a very large number of people in danger of being fined, incurring penalty points or even losing their licences."
