In a bid to track speeding motorists, speed cameras of a new category using satellite technology and number plate recognition have been trialled on British roads.
Developed by US-based firm PIPS Technology, the new SpeedSpike system combines automatic number plate recognition and GPS capabilities to capture the positions of cars. The cameras then calculate an average speed over a distance.
In order to enforce speed restrictions, the system could be installed in areas such as motorways, A roads, urban "rat runs" as well as around schools.
The company revealed that the new high-tech cameras were tested on sites including Salter Road in Southwark, south London, and the A374 from Torpoint to Antony in Cornwall.
Already, a number of drivers have been spotted risking their car insurance policies by breaking speed limits.
The firm devised the Spike Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera used in the London congestion charging zone. PIPS Technology also has offices in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
