Speeding Cole's insurance may leap

Back

England footballer Ashley Cole could find his car insurance a tad more expensive if he escapes a ban that may follow his conviction for driving more than 100mph in a 50mph zone.

The Chelsea star, who has been warned he may be barred from the roads, was in his black Lamborghini Gallardo on the A3 in Kingston, Surrey, when a speed gun recorded him driving at 104mph.

Cole denied the charge at Kingston Magistrates' Court, claiming he was being chased by paparazzi.

But magistrates' chairwoman Judith Jewell said the bench was convinced he was travelling at 104mph, that the evidence of the police officer was credible, and the equipment was operating properly.

Sentencing was adjourned so Cole, who was not at the trial, could be present.

Traffic officer John Wills, of Surrey Police, who was carrying out speed checks on Robin Hood Way, said Cole complained about photographers after being cautioned but added the photographer was not in evidence when he first saw the Lamborghini.

Cole will be sentenced on January 29.
