Many motorists in Britain do not fully understand 'green' car technologies, despite believing environmental credibility is an important factor in a new purchase, a survey has found.
Less than two out of five people have a good knowledge of hybrid and electric vehicles, although more than half say they would consider green technology when choosing a car, according to Yahoo! UK.
It is also suspected that few people have any idea how driving a environmentally-friendly motor could affect their car insurance outlay.
The poll of 5,800 people found that 60 per cent were more interested in fuel- and money-saving techniques than in the developments of electric vehicles.
The study also revealed that more women than men considered green fuel technology an important factor when making purchase decisions.
Around 20 per cent of those surveyed said they were thinking of buying a car in the next six months, with 45 per cent finding TV commercials the most influential form of car advertising.
Yahoo! UK & Ireland category director of automotive Ian Webber said: "We're seeing early signs of a rise in consumer confidence in the automotive industry as consumers look to begin spending and researching a new car choice.
"Developments in green technology will undoubtedly change the current market. Rightly, consumers acknowledge the importance of reducing emissions and protecting our environment.
"Our research indicates that despite believing green technology is a key consideration when purchasing a car, there is still a need to further educate customers on green technology."
