Thieves steal Fox's car and laptop

A Tory politician has become a victim of burglary after thieves stole his car and a laptop computer that was in it.

Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox was at home when the items were taken from his central London property.

It was rumoured that briefing papers for the second leader's television debate were among the stolen items. Car insurance and home insurance policies will help him to replace the items if they are not recovered by police.

His wife, Jesme, was not with Mr Fox at the gated community. According to sources she was stranded in Hong Kong due to the airport shutdown caused by the volcanic ash from Iceland.

Details of the break-in emerged on the day quarterly crime statistics for England and Wales were published by the Home Office. Ironically the largest falls were vehicle theft and other linked offences (down 16%), criminal damage (down 11%) and fraud-type crimes (down 9%).

Dr Fox had been due to outline the Tories' armed forces manifesto but the launch was cancelled at short notice.

There have been no arrests, the spokesman for Scotland Yard said.

A Conservative spokesman said: "I can confirm that Liam Fox's car was stolen and police are investigating."
