Travellers fib about destinations

Back

If you have ever told a tall tale or been “economical with the truth” about your travel experiences, you are not alone, according to a new survey.

Some 15% of those polled for vehicle rental company easyCar.com admitted to having lied about the places they have visited. Almost half of respondents (45%) told friends and family they had “visited” countries that were in fact merely airport stopovers - and men were worse than women for making such claims.

The survey also identified a need for potential holidaymakers to check they have car insurance and travel insurance in place, with 43% planning to take a road-trip break in the next year. The three most popular destinations for such a trip are the US, Australia and Canada, although China, Chile and India are also attracting increasing numbers of travellers from the UK.

Bill Jones, chief executive of easyCar.com, said: "As it becomes simple to visit far-flung destinations, people's perceptions of a 'well-travelled' individual change - and some holidaymakers feel the need to bend the truth.

"However the kudos now is to get off the beaten track and hit the road, especially visiting somewhere like the USA which has a vast array of landscapes and environments to explore."
