Our Top 4 Budget Family Holiday Destinations

It’s no secret that taking the family away can cost a small fortune these days, especially as the price is often inflated during the school holidays. Not to mention money put aside for souvenirs, entry fees, meals out – and if you’re taking the car, add fuel and parking on to your expense list too. Fear not though, as there are some hidden holiday gems that won’t cost the world…

No.1 Menorca – Spain

Menorca has a stellar reputation for being a family-friendly destination. The beaches are among some of the best in Europe – and are often the first choice for people who want to spend a lazy day in the sunshine, dipping in and out of the turquoise sea.

If however you’d like to do something different, there are some fantastic water parks to take the children to. There really isn’t a better way to spend your time (parents included) than spiralling down water slides and giant flumes.

When choosing a place to stay you have an abundance of all-inclusive hotels and self-catered apartments, so depending on what your preferences are this Spanish island really does have something for everyone.

No.2 Barcelona – Spain

Barcelona is a brilliant city to take the children to. Not only do you have a beach where you can soak up the sun, there are also some really great days out to be had.

Take CosmoCaixa for example – which is rumoured to be the biggest science museum in Spain. There you can learn about the plants and ecosystems of the Amazon rainforest, and take a journey through space and time in the Planetarium. CosmoCaixa is a great day out for children of all ages, as there really is so much to see and do.

Another highlight of the city is the Museu de la Xocolata. This chocolate themed attraction tells the story of the history of chocolate and how it was introduced to Europe. The museum is highly interactive and there are touch-screen computers as you go along to keep the little ones entertained.

No.3 Brittany – France

Brittany is only a ferry ride away, giving you the opportunity to dodge those extortionate air fares during the school holidays. There are a lot of attractions for the family to get involved with – and if your children are fascinated by dinosaurs and all things Jurassic the Parc de Préhistoire de Bretagne would be a good choice.

This park has more than 30 Jurassic scenes featuring life-size dinosaurs, such as triceratops and stegosaurus, to name just two. If however fairy tales, and the legends of the Knights of the Round Table are more popular in your home you might want to stop by the Château de Fougères. This beautiful castle is one of the largest surviving fortresses in Europe and the never ending turrets and towers will most certainly feed imaginations.

No.4 Disneyland Paris – France

Disneyland Paris is the perfect destination for Disney fans. Depending on your budget you can choose to stay within the resort itself or find somewhere that’s a short ride away on the Paris Metro or by car. There are so many rides to enjoy from the Phantom Manor to the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril rollercoaster. Pass options can be quite flexible and you can opt for a 2-day pass so that it gives you enough time to experience all the rides and collect those important character autographs!
