Planning a staycation or just spending some time away from home? Whether you’re escaping to the countryside, enjoying a beach break or visiting friends and family, it’s worth thinking about how to keep your belongings safe when you’re not at home. That’s where personal possessions cover comes in; a smart little extra you can add to your home insurance that could save the day if things go missing or get damaged while you’re away from home.
Personal possessions cover can only be added to esure Home Insurance policies – if you have an esure Flex Home Insurance policy, you can choose to include cover away from home as part of your policy instead. If you choose to take this out we provide cover up to the limits shown in your schedule.
What is personal possessions cover?
Personal possessions cover can protect your valuables when you take them outside your home. While contents insurance only covers items inside your house, this cover travels with you. So, if items like your phone, laptop or jewellery go missing or get damaged while you’re away, you’re covered – subject to policy limits, which you can find below.
At esure, our Personal Possessions Cover also includes family members who permanently live at your address. You also get cover for your belongings for up to 60 days at a time when you’re not in the UK.
When taking out your policy, you’ll need to give us an overall value for the items you’ll need covering, and we will provide cover up to this limit. When working out the amount of cover you need you should use the cost of replacing your things brand new. Anything valued at more than £1,499 individually, or any bike valued at £500 or more (or £300 or more for esure Flex policies), needs to be declared as a specified item.
What does personal possessions insurance cover?
A handy safety net for your everyday essentials, esure’s Personal Possessions Insurance provides cover for the loss, theft or accidental damage (up to the specified items limit) of things like:
- Laptops, phones and other electronics
- Jewellery and watches
- Keys
- Wallets, purses and cash (as long as the amount of cash being claimed for is below your overall cover limit)
- Bicycles, sports equipment and musical instruments
- Clothing and bags
Let’s face it, many of us carry a lot of high-value items with us when we’re out and about or travelling. The costs of laptops, mobiles and other expensive electronic devices can add up; without cover, replacing them after an accident or theft could cost a small fortune.
Are my belongings covered when I’m spending a few nights (or more) away?
Absolutely, personal possessions away from home cover can be great for:
On a UK holiday: Your belongings stay protected during your UK staycation, from camping trips to cosy cottages or luxury hotels.
At a friend’s house: Spending time with family and friends? Your belongings are covered just as they would be at home.
While in the car: If you’ve got valuables in your car during road trips, they’re covered against theft or damage on the move if someone uses force to break into the car. You’ll need to make sure they’re kept hidden from view and locked away.
While abroad: With esure, your personal possessions are covered for up to 60 days outside the UK.
What’s the difference between standard contents cover and personal possessions cover?
Standard contents insurance covers your belongings when they’re inside your home, while personal possessions cover is designed to protect your things when you take them out with you.
When might you need personal possessions cover while travelling?
Lost items: Accidents happen, and items can get lost during your travels. This cover helps you replace lost belongings without the stress or cost falling on you.
Theft from a hotel or car: If your belongings get stolen while you’re away or parked up, personal possessions cover can help with repairs or replacements.
Gadgets on the go: Your mobile phone, camera or other gadgets you take with you can face damage or theft when you’re out.
What’s not covered under personal possessions cover?
As with any insurance, there are a few limitations and exclusions to be aware of:
Limits and exclusions:
- Business tools kept in a van
- Items stolen from a car if left visible
- Items stored in a storage unit
- Wear and tear
- Parts of a bike (we will only provide cover if the entire bike is stolen after being secured to a fixed point)
Note: Any item valued more than £1499, or any bike valued at £500 or more (or £300 or more for esure Flex policies), must be declared as a specified item. These values should be the costs of replacing the items brand new. For full details on this additional cover, please refer to the policy booklet.
Staycations are supposed to be stress-free. With esure’s Personal Possessions Cover, you can focus on making memories, not managing mishaps. If you want to add to your policy, please contact us via Livechat, and we’ll be happy to help.
