What our customers say

Toyota Insurance

Early Beginnings

The origins of the Toyota car manufacturing company we know today, can be traced back to Toyoda Automatic Loom Works.  Revolutionising the weaving industry, the automatic loom patent was later sold on–raising the finances to kick start Toyoda’s foray into the fledgling Japanese car manufacturing industry.

In 1937 Toyoda decided to change its name, so held a competition, whereby all the employees could enter suggestions. As you can guess Toyota was the winning entry. But why? Because Toyota takes 8 strokes to write in Japanese, and is considered a lucky number.

First Car

Toyoda’s first car was the prototype Toyoda AA–a passenger car, developed and completed by 1936. At that time the Japanese market was predominantly saturated with American cars–and Toyoda had to compete with the likes of Ford and General Motors. Unsurprisingly the Toyoda AA was heavily inspired by these American car brands, with some parts even being interchangeable.

Present Day

Today Toyota has established itself as one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, with currently 52 overseas manufacturing plants, in 27 countries.2 Wherever you are in the world you could probably buy a Toyota, as they are sold in more than 160 countries.2

But it’s not just about sales. The Toyota brand are environmentally conscious and are pioneering the manufacture of Hybrid models–in fact they make up 70% of alternatively powered vehicles sold in Europe.  To date Toyota has sold 10,000,000 hybrids worldwide, saving the planet 77 million tons of CO2.3

Toyota Car Insurance Groups

We insure plenty of Toyota models, so have pulled together a list of the insurance groups popular Toyotas fall into. Of course we can’t mention every Toyota we insure so if your car isn’t on the list, it doesn’t mean to say we won’t insure it. Get a quote today to find out how much you could save.

Toyota Aygo Insurance Groups

The Toyota Aygo is built for navigating through busy city roads. Engine size as you’d expect is modest so the Aygo typically falls into the lower end of the insurance group ranges, peaking at 8. The latest models come in many trims, with lots of opportunity for personalisation. Entry-level technical specs include USB and AUX-in capabilities. But if you opt for the higher spec option you get built-in gadgets such as a touch screen multimedia system. Naturally the higher spec trims could fall into a higher insurance grouping as repairs could be more expensive.

Toyota Auris Insurance Groups

The Auris is a practical hatchback that comes in a range of engine sizes depending on how much power you want. Some models do have more engine sizes to choose from, including a sporty diesel if you wanted a bit more power behind the wheel. Of course it’s worth keeping in mind a more powerful model of the Auris could put you in a higher insurance group, so you could end up paying more for your policy. The Auris Touring Sports is the estate equivalent of the hatchback, it comes in several trims, and engine types, including a hybrid model. Insurance groups vary depending on the power of the engine you choose.

Toyota Celica Insurance Groups

This is the seventh generation of the Toyota Celica coupé first introduced in 1999, with the last one rolling off the production line in 2006. Engine size is modest for a sports car, so it fits into the more mid-range insurance groups. The Celica is also a front-wheel drive, which can be a plus as it’s not going to be as powerful as a four-wheel coupé, and place as high in the insurance groupings.

Toyota Avensis Insurance Groups

The Toyota Avensis comes in a range of body types, hatchback, saloon, estate, and tourer. The hatchback has several trims, and engine size does vary. The entry-level S trim engine starts at 1.6 gets up to 2.0–it can go from 0–60mph in 11.0 seconds–depending on the type of engine you have. Insurance groupings for the S trim are relatively low, peaking at 17. If you opt for a trim with a larger, more powerful engine your insurance group could be higher. In comparison the saloon is a large family car–there are plenty of trims to choose from, some including extra features such as cruise control and alloy wheels in the Business Edition, insurance groups are low to mid-range. The tourer and estate also come in several trims with varying engine sizes, spanning across low to mid-range insurance groups.

Toyota Corolla Insurance Groups

The Toyota Corolla has four body types, hatchback, saloon, estate, and the compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) the Verso. The hatchback has some sportier trims, which can go from 0–60mph in 6.7 seconds. Of course the more powerful engine the higher the insurance group, so keep this in mind when it comes to your budget. The Verso people carrier features both diesel and petrol engines–so it might be worth weighing up your needs and whether you’re going to be doing long-distance, or local trips for the school run. Insurance groups for the Verso as expected are mid-range, when you take into account engine size and specs. The estate and saloon follow suit and also fall into mid-range insurance groups.

Does esure offer third party only insurance?

No, the lowest level of cover we offer our customers is third party, fire and theft. This insurance would protect your car if it was stolen, or damaged by fire, but it wouldn’t be covered if it was damaged in an accident.

Would esure insure my Toyota if I were to take it to Europe?

We do offer European car insurance if you wanted to take your Toyota to Europe. If you just use your certificate of insurance as proof you’ll be covered at most to a third party only level.  But for an additional fee you can match your protection to what you have in the UK. To find the full list of European countries we cover, please visit our European car cover page.
