About Suzuki

The history of Suzuki

Founded by Michio Suzuki in 1920, the company originally manufactured looms for the silk industry. Wanting to diversify his business, Michio Suzuki became interested in automobiles and built his first small prototype in 1937. The company launched its first motorcycle, the Power Free, in 1952, and its first car, the Suzuki Sunlight, in 1955. The company continued to grow during the following decades, and its annual car production reached 10 million in 1989. In 1999 it released the Hayabusa (or GSX1300R), which many consider the ultimate sports bike due to its top speed of 188-194mph.

The Suzuki in the modern era

Today, Suzuki has over 45,000 employees, and 35 production facilities in 23 different countries. It is known in Europe and the United States for producing small, fuel-sports efficient cars like the Suzuki Swift, and modern motorcycles like the GSX250R. However, in Japan, Suzuki’s minicars and mopeds are more popular.
