Hobby holidays surge in popularity
- Four out of ten Brits have been on a hobby holiday in the last two years
- Most popular choices include music trips, theatre weekends away, and travelling to see a football club play away
- 54% of men have been on a hobby holiday in the last two years often taking expensive sporting equipment with them such as golf clubs1
- Average hobby holiday is three nights long at a cost of £300 per trip
The days of a relaxing holiday of lying on the beach drinking a cocktail is over. A new emerging trend has been identified by esure travel insurance for Brits to spend their hard-earned time off enjoying a hobby holiday, with many spending hundreds of pounds every year to go on a special interest break.
And the choice of activities are vast with music holidays topping the list and interests such as walking, volunteering and watching football making the top ten. The top ten activities amongst those who have been away for their hobby are:
1. Watching music - 25%2
2. Walking – 19%
3. Theatre / opera / ballet / shows – 15%
4. Spa day – 15%
5. Watching football – 15%
6. Cycling – 9%
7. Volunteering – 7%
8. Health and wellbeing – 6%
9. Playing music – 6%
10. Playing football – 5%
It’s easy when jetting off for a short weekend to forget about travel insurance, however holiday-goers should ensure they have cover in place should the worst happen. Many hobby holiday bookings will include tickets or fees for pre-booked trips all of which will be covered if you need to cancel or miss the event due to circumstances outside of your control. And when it comes to sporting breaks, holiday goers will often take expensive sports equipment with them, such as golf clubs, which are targeted by thieves or can be lost in transit.
Plus travel insurance will cover you for cancellation costs in the event you are unable to travel for medical or family emergency reasons, medical costs, and cancellation costs if you are delayed for over 12 hours in reaching your destination.
Nikki Sellers, Head of Travel Insurance at esure said: “It’s great to see so many people making the most of their time off and spending time doing something they enjoy. Travel insurance for your trip away will give you complete peace of mind so you can enjoy your break be that cookery, sports or learning about pig keeping if that’s your thing.”
