About MG

The history of MG

The company was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber, a young salesman working for Morris Garages in Longwall Street, Oxford. Kimber had started producing his own versions of his employer’s cars, and he quickly gained a reputation for making ‘affordable performance vehicles’. Kimber named his company MG as a nod to his previous employer, William Morris. The first MG car was the 14/28 Super Sports, which was launched in 1924. Over the next few years, the MG brand grew, finding success both on the racetrack and in the commercial car market. It was sold to Morris Motors in 1935, and both companies were absorbed into The British Motor Corporation Limited in 1952.

The MG in the modern era

After WWII, MG moved away from saloon-type cars and started producing more modern, comfortable sports cars. It released the MGB in 1955, followed by the MGB GT, a fixed head coupé (FHC) in 1965. The company became part of the British Leyland, which would eventually become Rover, in 1975. With the company changing hands several times, MG stopped producing sports cars in 1980, and did not start again until the release of the MG RV8 in 1992. Rover eventually went into receivership, but MG was bought by the Nanjing Automobile Group. MG’s first new model to be launched in the UK for 16 years, the MG 6, was released in June 2011.
